What challenge did the client face?

Delivering material plans, including way-finding solutions, for a complex multi-socioeconomic and multi-generational housing community in Boulder County within a strict timeline and budget. There were additional challenges coordinating the work with a diverse leadership team and the need to listen and synthesize all of their goals.

How did we solve this design challenge?

We designed and implemented a vibrant, color-coded wayfinding system throughout the 400-unit community—most notably in the senior living residences—to ensure ease of navigation for all. We also created finish plan documents to guide all of the contractors in their work.

What business results came from the design?

Willoughby Project was completed delivering 192 affordable homes in Phase 1 (final planned total: 400) with a $114 million investment and $15 million in public infrastructure improvements, and establishing a new benchmark for inclusive and sustainable community living in Boulder County.

What does the client say about the project?

"Willoughby Corner is the result of years of planning, persistence, and strong partnerships. This community shows what’s possible when local, state, and federal partners work together toward a shared goal... while also setting a new standard for sustainability.”—
